At dawn the next morning, the angels became insistent. "Hurry," they said to Lot. "Take your wife and your two daughters who are here. Get out right now, or you will be swept away in the destruction of the city!" Lot hesitated, so the angels had to force Lot and his family out of the city. The angels gave a warning to Lot and his family: "Run for your lives! And don't look back or stop anywhere in the valley."
After reaching their destination, "the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah". He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, wiping out all the people and every bit of vegetation. But, Lot's wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt."
Are you familiar with this story in the Bible? This story can be found in Genesis 19:1-26
Moral of the story:
Don't look back! If God has so graciously saved you from destruction, why would you want to go back to that dark place? That place of destruction may have been your lost job, relationship, or that sinful life. Why would you want to re-open a door God has permanently shut in your life? Why would you want revive that unhealthy relationship(s), wordly friends, addiction or sinful lifestyle? Yes, God's grace is sufficient, but don't abuse it. Obedient is better than sacrifice. It's better to hearken to the word of God, than have to pay for your disobedience later.
God saved Lot and his family, because He had plans to destroy the wickedness of that city. He didn't want them to be a part of destruction, although they lived among sinners, they weren't sinners.

If Lot's wife has just listened to the warnings of the angels, she wouldn't have been stagnant (pillar of salt). I guess she looked back, because of all the wealthy, gold, luxurious things she will be leaving behind (or so she thought). Maybe she wasn't sure if she should forsake that life and move on to better things (God plans are the best). God knew His plans for them (His plans for us are always good, even better than the ones we have for ourselves) and wanted them to follow His commands.
Many times, God will clearly tell or show (or give signs) us the right thing to do, but as human beings, we often refuse to do so. Our fleshy desires will often lead us to disobey God and go down that broad path. If God can be so kind to let you know right from wrong, why not choose the right way? It's probably because we have our hearts set on wordly things, and afraid to leave them behind, to Go with God.
Choosing to Go with God may not be an easy road, but it'll be the best decision you can ever make in life. Choose God, and let Him lead the rest of the way.

What is your interpretation of the story of Lot's wife?
Take care! :)

Yeah love this post. More of these <3. Yeah we ought to strive after total obedience and let go of things that can hinder us from serving God :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteVery well stated, Maggie! For us to be completely obedient to God's will, we have to ask for His grace. We can't do it on our own.
DeleteMore posts like this, by God's grace! :)
Thanks for sharing! Not always easy but possible by his grace.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Nike. It's not always easy, but trust me, I've had to deal with this too. God continues to show forth. :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for this Seun! It hit home a lot! Like you said if God has so mercifully delivered you from destruction and destructive people, why would you go back? Love it!

Aww! I'm so glad it did, Sade!! I'm also learning from this :)
DeleteGreat post! In a way, I think looking back can be a reminder for some of us about how far we've come. It can serve as a reminder to be grateful for the things that God as placed in our lives. It's not always easy to remain moving forward into the unknown when what's behind you is so familiar, even though it may be bad for you.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, Ms. Ticka.
DeleteToo many times, I find myself being amazed at how far I've come. Sometimes, I don't even believe I can be where I am today, because of my past. It's also not easy to move forward, if you have people in your life, who constantly remind you of how bad your past was... That is why we must declutter our lives of negative things and people.
It's not always easy, but if we're determined to move forward, no matter how afraid you may be, then it's possible.
We don't always have to know what the future holds, but the ONE who holds the future is already there, waiting for us to take a step. :)
Thanks for your contribution. Sorry for the long reply :)
Wow it is amazing how many minds think alike or do the same thing....My daily devotion this morning was this same Genesis 19:1-26 and i really thought about the important of obedience and you put everything so well.
ReplyDeleteWow! I so love this. You know, the passage was my morning devotion last month! I've had the post saved in my drafts for more than 2 weeks now. I wasn't sure when to post it, or how to conclude. I'm so glad I published it today.
DeleteGod is good o!! :)
If I write, it will basically be a repetition of what most of these ladies have said haha :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and I agree, more of these would be awesome :)
Thanks for sharing dear! Our human understanding sometimes longs for the old, rotten stuff without comprehending that where you are or where God is taking you is so much better! One thing I always say is that, no matter how things may seem, life just keeps getting better and better.

I can recall so many instances where I didn't feel like obeying God because my flash wanted to go another direction but I didn't go the other direction cause I've learnt that obedience and serving God has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with feelings. We ought to go with God, not our feelings, feelings come and go. It may be uncomfortable but that is the beauty of God, He only operates outside of our comfort zone so that he can stretch us to become MIGHTY wo/men of God! Just imagine how terrible it would have been for us if Jesus didn't get out of his comfort zone. Thank God he did.
ReplyDeleteA comfort zone can mean an old relationship, unhealthy friendship, a job ect. and God cannot use us if don't want to get out of our comfort zone. Let's go with God where he can use us MIGHTILY.
Excellent post, sorry I know I went off topic a bit!! LOL, I couldn't stop typing!!
Ah great lesson...
